The artenterprise Goupil is founded in 1829 by Adolphe Goupil in Paris. He was distributor of the prints of artworks of Theo Van Gogh, Jean-Léon Gérôme and many other artists in the fine arts.

Jean-Léon Gérôme refused to follow the new wave of impressionists and kept on to neoclassicism and became one of the leading exponents of orientalism.

Gérôme regularly undertook expeditions to the Middle, Near and Far East. Among others to North Africa, Egypt in 1857, Sinai, Palestine and Turkey in 1854. During these trips Gérôme make oil sketches on location in the open air.

Digital copy of the photogravure of Jean-Léon Gérôme can be obtained for $US 10.
